For Your Information:
A question asked of HCFA: "Do you acknowledge Deep
Pharyngeal Neorumuscular Stimulation (DPNS) as a
skilled SLP intervention to improve swallow function
or do you deny this type of treatment?"
HCFA/Blue Cross Blue Shield of California's answer
(9/8/00): "There are no specific review guidelines
for DPNS. Documentation must include an evaluation
that supports the use of DPNS and goals must be
functional for the patient. The skilled nature of the
treatment must be documented as well as progress
toward functional goals. DPNS is not automatically
denied."
