[DYSPHAGIA] Radiologist @ MBS
- Subject: [DYSPHAGIA] Radiologist @ MBS

This issue seems to come up on the listserv periodically. Here's the response from the FAQs on Dysphagia from the ASHA web site:
ASHA's practice policy document Instrumental Diagnostic Procedures for Swallowing states that typically studies are performed by a radiologist, an x-ray technician and a speech-language pathologist, but in some institutions by the SLP and radiology technician with consultation as needed by the physician. If the patient is covered by Medicare, their dysphagia coverage guidelines state that the study is performed by a physician in consultation with an SLP. In addition, some state regulatory agencies for radiology procedures require that the radiologist be present. Thus, while the radiologist or physician's presence is not required by ASHA policy, Medicare and state guidelines should also be considered.

Does anyone know for certain whether it is absolutely necessary for a radiologist to be present at an MBS? Would it be legal/ethical for the study to be "read" at a later time like some other radiologic procedures? Perhaps like many of you, staffing issues with the radiologists limit scheduling of MBS(s). Thank you for your replies.
