Haven't gotten a post in over a week. This is a test.

Subject: [Dysphagia] VFSS and NG tubes

Since the subject of VFSS standards etc has come up again, the issue of
performing VFSS with an NG tube in place deserves another mention.
Although the following study has only 10 subjects - as is the problem
with much of the work in this field - it nevertheless, added to the
Brasseur and Dodds article, points out that an NG tube alters swallowing
in normals therefore is more likely to do so in dysphagic patients:

Huggins PS; Tuomi SK; Young C. Effects of nasogastric tubes on the
young, normal swallowing mechanism. Dysphagia 1999 Summer;14(3):157-61
The present study aimed to investigate the effects of different-sized
nasogastric tubes on swallowing speed and function in 10 young normal
volunteers. The presence of a wide-bore nasogastric tube caused
significant duration changes in several swallowing measures, namely
duration of stage transition, duration of pharyngeal response, duration
of pharyngeal transit, and duration of upper esophageal sphincter
opening. Similar trends were seen for the fine-bore tube. The
implications for nonoral feeding of patients with swallowing disorders
are discussed.
