Commercial pureed-consistency baby food is frequently used with elderly
adults who have swallowing difficulties. A nutritionally appropriate diet would
be developed by the dietitian to determine the adequate caloric and nutrient
needs of the individual. Specific foods to include in the diet would be
selected from the fruit, vegetable, grain and protein foods offered in the various
commercial baby food lines. These foods do not have "depleted nutritional
values". One of the advantages of baby foods is that the FDA has much stricter
growing regulations and more strict standards in pesticide use for fruits and
vegetables used to prepare baby food. The nutrients in each jar of food are
available so that a nutritionally complete diet can be calculated for
individuals of any age (infant to elderly).
