[Dysphagia] RE: E-stim for dysphagia

I write in defense of Irene.
Anyone who has taken a good neuroanatomy course (which should be everyone
working with disease process) can figure out a relatively easy to administer
examination for cranial nerve damage. I will get you started with a few:

I-olfactory (sensory) have pt. close eyes and identify smells such as
coffee, peppermint, etc. with alternating nostrils occluded with your
finger.

II-optic (sensory) Have them read. Count fingers you hold up. Check visual
field at all points. Check color vision using bright primary colored
objects.

III Oculomotor (motor); IV-Trochlear (motor); VI-Abducens (motor) Test
together because motor functions overlap. Inspect eyelids for droop; test
ocular movement in all quadrants of visual field and notice eye deviation.
Also look at light reflexes with a pen light.

OK, that's half of the cranial nerve exam. Anyone want to finish it?
NOT Irene, because she can teach this with her hands tied behind her back.
Come on you guys, put on your thinking caps and see what you come up with.

have NEVER refused to help or give information to anyone who asks and I
believe, honestly, that I have given freely of my experience and knowledge
to this list serve for several years. I am deeply hurt that anyone would
believe and say that I withhold information that could be of assistance to
clinicians and, more importantly, to their patients. How many of your
identified "experts" can say the same? And, how many currently or in recent
years, work clinically with all types and ages of patient?
