[Dysphagia] FEES + clinical privileges

FEES had been ruled to be outside the scope of practice for SLPs in NJ. We
have been working with the licensing committee and they have just published
regulations for comment. These would require the SLP to be certified in
Basic Life Support, to have completed a 12 hour seminar or workshop in FEES
which qualified for ASHA CEUs, to observe 10 FEES procedures and Perform 25
FEES procedures under the supervision of an SLP who has met the requirements
or a physician experienced in FEES. The SLP would only be able to perform
FEES in a healthcare facility licensed by the Dept. of Health and Senior
Services and with a physician who received triaing in endoscopy during
residency to be present.
We will be asking for some clarifications on this.

Hello to you all,

Our facility is currently working on establishing a training protocol to
enable speech pathologists to be granted clinical privileges to perform
nasendoscopy to assess swallowing. We are aware of Susan Langmore's
recommendations and were
wondering what other facilities are doing/have done?

I would be most grateful for your comments as we want to get this right!

Many thanks,
Danielle Czapnik
