[Dysphagia] RE: Motor Neurone Disease or ALS

  • Subject: [Dysphagia] RE: Motor Neurone Disease or ALS

Any helpful strategies beyond the usual dietary mods that assist in management of this client group i.e. MND/ALS?
I have found the supraglottic swallow to be helpful to reduce penetration/aspiration on thin fluids, use saliva meds to control excess saliva.
Thanks

Hello everyone,

Anyone have any suggestions on common fast food menu
items that would work for patients on either a pureed
or minced diet? I had a mother ask me about this
recently - she wants her son to be able to go on fast
food restaurant outings with his peers. The only
thing that came to my mind was mashed potatoes at KFC
or a similar restaurant. Anyone have any other
suggestions?

Of course he could always get take-out and the food
could be modified at home, but mom wants him to be
able to eat at the restaurant with his peers. Thanks
in advance for any suggestions!

-Sandi

Sandi,
Interactive Therapeutics, Inc. carries a booklet that addresses just that
concern. It is called Dining Out (Product #275) and covers most of the
national chains according to the National Dysphagia Diet. It is $5.50 in
single copies. You can see more about it at our website:

Hi All,
Anyone out there on the listserv attending the NSS conference in Chicago Oct
15-16 (C Lazarus, J Naas, Tom Franceschini and Mary Casper on Pharma, GERD,
Esoph, xerostomia, oral care, nutrition/lab values, sensory/motor)?
I am thinking about attending...any feedback on any of the presenters or
topics or just the NSS conferences in general. This would be my first one
(been practicing for 9 years though) through NSS.
Thanks for any and all feedback.
Kim
