[Dysphagia] NICU vent feeding question

  • Subject: [Dysphagia] NICU vent feeding question
  • From: otto at email.chop.edu (Staci Otto)
  • Date: Thu Feb 17 06:38:30 2005

what are the rest of her settings on the vent? and does she have a
cuffed trach? how much does she breath above the vent or is she riding
it?

At the very least she could try dipped pacifiers with her and see how
she handles that (if she isn't cuffed, or can tolerate cuff down)...and
be able to provide info to the team that way.

The therapist who works with babies in the NICU at our hospital asked
me to post this question to the group. She has a preemie born at 24
weeks, now 4 months old which is just term corrected age, tracheal
stenosis required tracheostomy, on vent, rate of 40. It was suggested

at team meeting to try bottle feeding, but she felt that the vent rate

was too high. She has never fed babies with vent rate above 10. Does

anyone else have experience with this, or advice?
Thanks,
