[Dysphagia] Reflux in CP

  • Subject: [Dysphagia] Reflux in CP

I have a question presented to me by a colleague who works with children and
my experience is with adults. One of the children on her caseload, a
4-yr-old with cerebral palsy and mild hypernasality, has been referred for
T&A. My colleague was concerned about increased hypernasality post-op but
the MD felt it was necessary because the child has recurrent sinusitis and
recently had pneumonia. The MD's thinking is that the adenoids have caused
the sinusitis which caused the pneumonia. My immediate thought was of
possible reflux and/or dysphagia. Shouldn't that be checked out before
surgery or am I way off base?
Thanks for any thoughts you can offer.
Linda
