Aspiration can be a trigger of Paradoxical Vocal Cord Dysfunction. It could be that when he penetrates or aspirates, he experiences closing of the larynx and the inability to inspire. ASHA has good articles online for VCD treatment with recovery breathing techniques that the patient could learn. The best treatment is to avoid the trigger behavior. It is difficult to treat penetration or aspiration that you did not witness on Video. However, given reduced laryngeal elevation and your speculation, treatment of laryngeal elevation could reduce the frequency of these episodes.
