The acute care facility I work at has gotten away from the use of blue dye tests for dysphagia assessment with the trach patients (due to evidence of it being contraindicated for those with sepsis, etc). Instead, we conduct very thorough assessments with a single consistency at a time, usually a dark colored puree to start with (ie; blueberry yogurt, etc). We then proceed in the same manner we would had we done the actual blue dye test.

Our facility is looking into updating our tracheostomy assessment protocol.
Also, we are looking for references regarding Blue Dye Protocol and are
curious as to other facilities assessment protocols for trache patients.
