Camille,

Here's an easy idea:  try  02 or very low 02 flow (if  extra 02 not needed) via a mask (over nose and mouth) with humidification.  Your respiratory therapist should be able to set this up, as an alternative to 02 via nasal cannula.  Humidification can also be put with a cannula, but many patients on cannulas breath through their mouths as they feel the cannula obstructs the those.  Naturally, the mouth breathing dries out the oral cavity further.
