[Dysphagia] Gastrografin alert

I agree. Gastrografin should never be used in swallow studies.

Subject: [Dysphagia] Gastrografin alert

One of the doctors I work with has mentioned that barium should no

longer be used in VFSS because of the effects to the lungs it has if

aspirated, and gastrographine should be used instead. Could anyone

comment or give me titles of articles I could look up.

*** Oh my!!! Alert on this one. Gastrografin should NEVER be used at all if
thre is any chance of aspiration as it can be llethal. The manufacturers specs
alone say this as well as several articles and legal cases. Barium, if aspirated
(barium plus water that is) is harmless to the lungs and was, up until the
1970?s injected directly into the lung to do bronchograms. This is a very
serious error on the paret of the physician who told you this and I suggest that
you bring it to his/her attention immediately.
