You can meet your hydration needs with thickened liquid if he is taking
enough. You can even meet your needs with purees. Think about hot cereal.
It's 90% liquid. Is the problem that he is not willing to drink the
thickened liquids and/or eat enough foods with high liquid content? Would
you want to consider the Frasier Water Protocol? Hilda Pressman

Subject: [Dysphagia] IV hydration
I've just begun working with geriatrics in a skilled nursing facility. I've
encountered great resistence from both doctors and facility staff to
hydrating dysphagia pathients with an IV when they are not getting enough
fluids through thickened liquids. I actually had one patient who's family
signed a waiver to give him thin liquids ama, then overheard the nurse
telling them to push fluids! Has anyone else encountered this?
Thanks!
