Forgot to add that the risk of pneumonia is directly related to the poor
nutrition typical of severe alcoholism, reducing immune defense and increasing
the risk of infections of all types including pneumonia caused by aspirated
bacteria in saliva - often particularly contaminated because of poor oral
hygiene. There is also the "Cafe coronary" that occurs when someone is eating too
much too fast when intoxicated and affected by the loss of fine motor control
from the cerebellum.
