Fw: [Dysphagia] Vfss/mbss preparation

With children, especially infants, the reason we have them NPO for 3
hours prior to the study is because unlike adults, they will not eat if
they are not hungry. Most babies who have full stomachs have no
interest in taking another bottle. As we grow (at least for me anyway)
I can eat when I am not hungry. Babies are smarter than adults in this
regard.
The rationale is not because the contrast tastes bad, because we flavor
it with the individual packets of Crystal Lite or Kool aid for the older
children, and will even mix their formula with the barium for the small
infants if necessary. Under 4 months of age, they do not seem to
dislike the taste of the liquid barium.

There is no need to fast and no need to deny food before the study
unless as suggested with children who dont want to swallow the"nasty
tasting stuff".
