I guess the answer might depend on what you mean by "investing". There is something called "conflict of interest", and it exists even when there is no actual commission of unethical behavior (falsifying data to make the research more interesting, etc.). Just the appearance of a conflict is enough for a concern to exist. So I believe the answer to your question is "yes, there may be ethical ramifications", especially if, by "investing" you mean something like purchasing stock in a drug company you are researching for and speculating that the investment will grow as a result of your research outcomes.

I'm new to the listserv, I am a graduate student at Kean University studying Speech-Language Pathology. I'm not very familiar with research funding, grants and personal investments in research, but is there any ethical ramifications involved with investing in your own research?
