[Dysphagia] Flouro

Perhaps this is the same item, there were a couple of articles, grouped
together for the purpose of CE in October 2004. The items were...and
sorry I don't have more info...

"A Discussion of Radiation in Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies" by Lisa
C. Lemen; Louisiana State Univ Health Sciences Center;

"Must a radiologist be present during a videofluoroscopic swallowing
study" by Amy Hasselkus and Mark L. Kander, ASHA, and Paula Sullivan,
William S Middleton Mem Veterans Hospital;

"Balance between radiation risks and obtaining a complete
videofluoroscopic swallow study in pediatric patients" Joan Arvedson,
Children's Hospital of Wisconsin; and

"Radiation safety during the videofluoroscopic swallow study: the adult
exam" Lisa N. Kelchner, Univ of Cincinnati

Wish I could provide more, I only have the copies from that time as I
was an intern or CF then:-)

There was a very nice issue of SID 13 Perspectives Newsletter dedicated
to that very issue awhile back, not sure of the date, I feel like it was
a late 2004 or early 2005 issue. You may wish to check the archives.

A lead glove might be a good option for you if your hand and arm are
frequently in the field. They make some lighter weight more flexible
gloves now that allow for greater range of motion for feeding patients.
Are you wearing a monitoring ring and badge? You can request your
annual report from the radiation safety engineer in your facility to
determine your precise amount of radiation exposure you are receiving.

Good Luck.

I'm wondering in anyone has any information regarding the amount of
radiation that you get while doing a swallowing study since as an SLP
you are often more in the path of the flouro being that sometimes you
really have to help the patient get the food/liquid in their mouth or
they are unable to hold things themselves. I had a new radiologist
today tell me that I should really try to not stand in the path so much
and I should try to switch hands while giving things to patients. He
was very concerned! I'm just not quite sure how out of the flouro we
really can stand when we have patients that are so disabled. Any ideas
or information you can share?

  Thank you
