[Dysphagia] performing modified barium swallow studies in the very early weeks of pregnancy
Sorry to hear about your loss. I have not seen any research... but, our radiologist is very particular and very concerned with radiation safety. I was trying to get pregnant, so she had me standing behind a portable lead wall until we found out we were pregnant. Now, she recommends standing behind this wall to anyone that is of child bearing age. After we found out we were pregnant, she said it was ok to wear a wrap around lead apron, stand behind her (wearing a lead apron) while standing behind the lead wall. I have a tech present/feed the patient. I was doing MBS' 4 days a week. She hinted to me that if possible, to decrease the number of days I do the studies, and have another therapist do them. So, I only do them 2-3 days a week. My obgyn agreed with this plan of action. Hope this helps

Subject: [Dysphagia] performing modified barium swallow studies in the very early weeks of pregnancy
I am a speech pathologist who regularily performs modified barium swallow studies. Recently, I lost a baby at 8 weeks gestation due to no fetal heart tones(this being my 5th pregnancy, the first in which this happened.) Since this was an unexpected pregnancy, I had done 2 modifieds in 1 day prior to realizing that I was pregnant. Has anyone seen the data regarding the safety of doing modifieds in the first few weeks of pregnancy, before realizing that you are pregnant. Do any speech pathologists do the modifieds while pregnant with special shielding (outside of the normal lead ?)
