[Dysphagia] RE: Provale cup

  • Subject: [Dysphagia] RE: Provale cup
  • From: Vicki.Dixon at sevtc.dmhmrsas.virginia.gov (Dixon, Vicki)

At our facility, we have used the Provale cup successfully with one client.
He tended to gulp all liquids at the beginning of his meal but was an
independent self-feeder that did not tolerate a lot of cuing and
intervention from staff. So the cup is used to regulate his sip size and
decreases the amount of assistance he requires from staff. So far, this
method is working well.

Do you know the website for the Provale cup?

The large handles on both sides of the cup also make it easy to use for
patients with limited dexterity.

I've heard of this cup, Provale, and was wondering what the opinions are
about it?
Most of what I've heard is from the company (http://www.reliantmp.com), and
it's been mentioned in company e-mails and such. It sounds like a good
option, and many times I've been wanting some way for a person to just take
smaller drinks because many patients I've worked with did better when they
didn't gulp.
Does anyone have any experience with these cups or have opinions about them?
Thanks.

I used it with a patient and he had difficulty getting the liquid out of the
cup. He needed to tilt his head back to retrieve the liquid. Have others
had the same problem?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I find that fact a bit disconcerting.

Read the Jan issue of Dysphagia -article by Suitor et all on estim showing
it did not work. Also read the on line article in Dysphagia by Humbert,
Ludlow, sonies et al also showing that it lowers the hyolaryngeal complex.
