[Dysphagia] Qualifications

I think there are a lot of SLPs on this listserve that are not aware that this is not a Speech Pathology listserve, but a multidisciplinary swallowing disorders listserv. It just so happens that the majority of the subscribers are SLPs, reflecting the current pattern of service provision in dysphagia .

I know this exchange is annoying to many, but if I may : I want to defend the need to talk about training and to discuss the contributions of different professions in this discipline. Several years ago, we had a heated exchange about OTs doing dysphagia, and the OTs on the listserve certainly felt compelled to explain their vantage point on the issue of their training. I , for one, found it enlightening. I have worked in a setting where OTs and SLPs both were involved in dysphagia evaluation, and while I didn't personally buy into the model of service delivery at that facility, I did see the benefits of team approach. The particular group of OTs that I worked with did not have a strong academic background in the physiology and anatomy of the pharynx/larynx and oral structures. However, if I went on just my individual professional experiences, I would say OTs are not as qualified to do oral pharyngeal swallow evaluations and treatment. But, because of the exchanges on this list, I know otherwise.

I think that it is very important to discuss these issues, but also realize that it is both human nature and self preservation that compel me to respond to Irene's statements about my profession in such a public forum.

What would be the relevance of asking for qualifications in the field of
Speech Pathology as opposed to qualifications in the area of Swallowing
	Service Provision?
