I agree with Hilda.
Having worked in the NICU fulltime for over 20 years, I am convinced
that, like any work setting we may be in, it is all about building
relationships, working as colleagues, and good communication with nurses
and neonatologists.
The NICU nurses are typically very bright, very dedicated and as you
know have very complex little patients. As the baby's advocate, it is
their responsibility throughout their shift to assure the best of care,
and to assure the infant's physiologic stability despite what the day
brings. As therapists, we depend on their expertise and their
collaboration with us to problem-solve and provide our care in the
context of the overall medical issues and priorities. In turn, we have
opportunities to broaden their perspectives, engage in respectful open
dialogue, appreciate our differences, share our unique information
regarding swallowing, breathing, the airway...
In a nutshell, we come to earn their respect and become true colleagues
as they learn to think along with us.
It is challenging but so rewarding to see these relationships grow and
thrive. I truly believe that thriving in an NICU is a journey, not a
destination.
I hope this is helpful!

On the positive side if you make friends with the nurse and respect her
input and information you will be able to accomplish alot. Hilda

My husband occ. works on the NICU (pharmacist) at another hospital,
and
he said NICU nurses can tend to be a territorial and wary breed when
looking
out for their little patients.
I would say this observation is right on target in many places. Only
after
the dysphagia clinician can prove his/her worth to the NICU staff can
inroads be made. That can take quite awhile!
