*** Yes - butit must be independent. Having been involved in several clincial trials I can assure you that independence of results is rare.
To identify an area that is, surprisingly, valid, the manufacturers of thickening agents have to stick to the facts. Truth in advertising obliges them to admit that there is no- including their own- research to indicate that thickening fluids has any positive effect whatsoever. see also Robbins, ASHA Div 13 Newsletter.
If the company cannot conduct its own trials, then what are the options?

Must they simply wait until a third party researcher comes up with funding of their own?
*** Yes. Difficult as it is these days - otherwise the results remain suspect.
