[Dysphagia] Re:(Dysphagia)Intervention
Years ago at ASHA in Chicago, the efficacy of number of repetitions was
raised in one of the short courses. At that time, the speaker (sorry, have
part-timers and can't recall who it was or the particular course) stated
that SLPs don't have efficacy data for muscle exercises in frequency and
number or reps, but physical therapy has lots of that and since we are all
working on muscle strengthening, we can use their data. Then a long detailed
explaination of muscle fatigue, etc, was given and the upshot of the
discussion as I recall it was that exercises should be conducted with 20
reps using effort and slower movements, then a rest period doing something
else for 1-5 minutes and another round of 20 repetitions. This would provide
benefit and be optimal twice daily. So when determining your patient's
exercise program, think of how many times a trainer has you repeat an
exercise. My PT wants me to do my knee exercises twice daily.
