[Dysphagia] Dysphagia and medications

And if you think it is bad with water (i.e. not getting enough to wash it down) watch most nurses give meds mixed in applesauce with just the one spoon of applesauce

I think the research here is trial and error on a case-by-case basis.
Medications and administration with water would be akin to "mixed textures"
in my mind. Medication administration is part of my eval because that's
something the nurses are concerned about. There is no particular one safe
method as patients are different. With some, it may be "crushed in pudding"
Of course there are always some meds that can't be crushed. Then you find
out if it's available in liquid form. If not, can the dose be offered whole
in pudding, etc. However, be aware that research does say that medication is
designed to be offered with 8 oz. of water to prevent pill burn or sticking
in the esophagus. Does ANY nurse do that? I've never found one. So I try to
get them educated about the benefits of giving the patient several swallows
of liquids before administering medication to lubricate the mucousa and
explain why it's so important. That's why I always liked doing breakfast
evals, because medication passes happened then, too.
