[Dysphagia] thickened liquids

I think this stresses the importance of having the dietitian involved in the planning of meals for persons with diabetes who require texture modification. Something I have found is not that the thickened liquids are to blame per-se but the fact that the pre-thickened products come in 250 ml (8 oz) cartons and this is considered at least 2 servings of fruit for these patients. Many patients do not tolerate 2 servings of juice (thickened or not) and especially at the breakfast meal.

I've had diabetic patients who had their blood sugars increase from drinking
thickened liquids. Just the carbs in the modified food starch was too much
for them. The fructose in this stuff would be out of the question for them.
