[Dysphagia] Use of Botox in Saliva Management

  • Subject: [Dysphagia] Use of Botox in Saliva Management

I am working with a 9 yr old girl who has global developmental delay with
complex seizure disorder and mild cerebral palsy. Her neurologist has
suggested injecting Botox into her salivary glands to reduce her drooling
(various medications have been tried previously with little or no effect).
This little girl is on a modified diet as she has difficulty with both the
oral and pharyngeal stages of swallowing (confirmed with videofluoroscopy).
I am concerned about the effect that the Botox might have on her already
compromised swallow, if there is 'leakage' of the Botox into surrounding
tissues / structures. I would appreciate any information regarding this.

Many thanks
Charlene
