[Dysphagia] aerophagia
We have found with some individuals that less air is swallowed with
straw drinking. We hypothesize that with the lips sealed around the
straw they are not taking air into their mouths like they might with cup
drinking. It may explain why with consecutive drinking his upper lips
may be in contact with the liquid and taking in less air, with single
sips his mouth position may be more open and allowing more air into his
mouth.
The other thought is reflux causing increased ingestion of air outside
of meals.

What can be done to reduce or eliminate the swallowing of air for a
gentleman who has mental retardation? He doesn't seem to do it on the
first of a series of consecutive swallows of liquids, but always does it
on single sips and the final consecutive swallow of liquids, and on
solids. He has abdominal bloating from the air, and the nurse
practitioner wants to know if there are any positions or adaptive
equipment that might help.
