The OT/PT department in my rehab unit want me to do a cog eval and tx on a
pt with Pick's disease. Clinical dysphagia eval was completed by another slp
(pt was admitted to our facility following d/c from hospital with a dx of
aspiration pneumonia). I know this gentleman personally (though I was not aware
of how advanced his dementia is at this point) and I know that his wife is
currently investigating LTC for him because he can no longer be left alone at
home........is there any justification for working with a pt with this dx? I
should add that I frequently work with dementia pts to improve functional
skills and to establish functional maintenance programs for family and staff,
so it's not the "dementia" diagnosis per se for which I'm questioning the
efficacy of tx.
Thanks in advance.
