Jeanne,
I agree, that much good comes about when a profession is asked to
question their practices, be it SLP and other therapists using thickened
liquids, etc, or the use of aides that has become a hot topic again
amongst physical therapists.

"I don't think I will ever see the point in the coy and thinly veiled
questions that appear to me as digs at the SLP profession."
A point may be to encourage an active response:
1) by professional associations i.e. ASHA, AOTA, who market their
professionals as competant in dysphagia management services,
-that these associations protect consumers by insuring their
professionals
meet the knowledge and skills that their own documents say they have;
-that these associations take initiative to support serious and creative
interdisciplinary problem solving with dietitians and nurses, toward
unbiased clarification of misconceptions, assessment of consumer needs,
and
appropriate outcome service provision, before these professionals are
simply
uninvited to the table due to payor decisions or inadequate outcome
performance.
2) by current dysphagia service provision professionals,
-to critically analyze dysphagia service marketing vs. patient outcomes
-to continue to increase support for each other in understanding and
implementing evidence based practice
-to try to see in an unbiased way, what is the best use of their skills,
and
to subsequently encourage their employers to utilize their skills in
such
manners.
